The governor of Maine, Janet Mills announced the suspension of his campaign for the Senate, in a decision that reconfigures the electoral landscape in one of the key states for the balance of power in Washington. The news comes a few weeks before the Democratic primaries scheduled for June 9.

Mills, considered the key Democratic candidate to contest the seat currently held by the Republican Susan Collinsrecognized that did not have the necessary financial resources to sustain a competitive campaign.

“I simply do not have what, unfortunately, political campaigns today require: the financial resources,” he said in a statement. The governor added that it was an “incredibly difficult decision,” underscoring the political weight of her retirement.

This movement represents a strategic blow for the democrats, who see in this seat a key opportunity to recover the effect an eye on of the Senate. The Democratic minority leader, Chuck Schumer had personally promoted Mills’ candidacyaware of his moderate profile and his ability to attract independent voters in a historically competitive state.

However, the campaign Mills faced obstacles from the start. The progressive candidate Graham Platner managed to surpass her in both fundraising and voting intention, consolidating himself as a favorite within the Democratic sinister.

Mills’ departure, just five weeks before the primary, could facilitate a force greatest among Democrats around a single candidate. However, it also raises questions about the viability of defeating Collins, who has a solid record of five terms and a moderate profile that has allowed him to maintain bipartisan support.
