Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a temporary truce in Ukraine on the occasion of Victory Day, next May 9an initiative that was supported by the US president, Donald Trump, according to the Kremlin.

According to the Russian diplomatic advisor, Yuri Ushakov, the proposal contemplates a ceasefire during the celebrations commemorating the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945, a date of great political and military symbolism in Russia.

“Putin informed his American colleague about his readiness to announce a truce during the Victory Day celebrations… Trump actively supported that initiative,” Ushakov declared.

Every May 9, Russia holds military parades in Red Square, tributes to veterans and weapons exhibitions, on a key day to reinforce the Kremlin’s historical discourse on World War II.

The proposal comes after a recent precedent, the brief ceasefire during the Orthodox Easter of April 11 and 12, which was valued positively by Trump. “This holiday commemorates our common victory over Nazism in World War II,” recalled the American president, according to the Kremlin.

Although both Moscow and kyiv accused each other of violations during that truce, analysts noted that there were no significant military advances or massive attacks, suggesting some room for temporary agreements.

So far in 2025, Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have agreed on two brief truces. However, deep differences persist: kyiv demands a ceasefire of at least 30 days, while Moscow rejects that possibility.

In addition, peace talks have remained paralyzed since mid-February. Still, Trump believes that an agreement could be close. “Trump believes that a deal to end the conflict in Ukraine is already close,” Ushakov said.

For its part, Putin assured that Russia maintains “the strategic initiative on the battlefield” and warned that “the objectives of the special military operation will be achieved in any case.” However, he left the door open to a negotiated solution, conditional on Ukraine agreeing to withdraw its troops from Donbas.

The Kremlin also pointed out coincidences between Putin and Trump regarding Ukraine, stating that both issued “similar assessments about the attitude of the Ukrainian regime,” which they accuse of prolonging the conflict with European support.
