At the end of 2024 Jorge Ramos (68), with 40 years of experience within Univision, left the network, thus closing his cycle as co-host of the most ambitious primetime news programs, “Noticiero Univision” and “Al Punto.” As confirmed at the time, the reasons for his departure were due to the fact that both he and Univision were not interested in renewing their contract.
I think that what I do now represents a much more intimate Jorge, more non-public, closer to the people. More like I’ve always been,”
We spoke exclusively with Ramos about his new reality, after a long career as the news face of Univision, since his departure from the small screen did not limit the impact of his voice. On the contrary, he made it even more acute by taking over his name, which has led him to create his own editorial line in an independent news podcast in Spanish called “As I See Things!”.
The journey with this project has led him to obtain two nominations for “News and Documentary Emmy 2026“in his first year as a freelance journalist. His podcast was recognized in the “Best News Program in Spanish” category, and Ramos himself received a nomination for “Best Journalist in Spanish.”
It is important to note that this recognition marks a milestone, being one of the first times that a podcast or independent news platform in Spanish reaches this level of recognition at the Emmys.
Regarding his podcast, Jorge Ramos characterizes it for us but at the same time tells us about the challenges he carries with him: “We are a credible, sustainable, legitimate digital communication medium. This experiment is giving good results. The next challenge is to make it economically sustainable, on the one hand, and the second challenge is to open the door to others who are doing exactly the same thing.”
The television will continue working. This does not mean that television is dead. What this means is that there is another way to see the news,”
Jorge feels proud of what he has achieved, he definitely does and he recognizes that although he always said what he wanted when it came to reporting responsibly from the Univision screens, it is also true that with his podcast his voice indeed belongs to him and he can also allow himself to be closer to people, letting them get to know him from a more human perspective.
“I have always said things as they are. I have practiced journalism with complete independence. But now when I am in a digital medium, that allows me not only to give the news and the data as they are but also allows me to give my opinion,” highlights Jorge Ramos.
The renowned journalist reflects that now, from the digital arena, of course there are clear differences. From television he only had to report the news, present the information, not give his opinion as he can do now.
“If you follow the program, you will realize that I not only say what is happening, but that I have the opportunity to give my opinion and be pro-immigrant, pro-Latino, pro-democracy and pro-freedom… Those are possibilities that simply did not apply to me before and that now I can do that,” Ramos accepts.
But another of the added values that it embraces with “This is how I see things!” is that it can be much more non-public. “I can give opinions and family anecdotes, I can be much more like I have always been, but people ultimately did not get to know me that way because it did not correspond to me.“, Ramos reviews.
In terms of numerical achievements, the project has managed to scale significantly (more than 100 million views in March through digital platforms), which reinforces this trend and validates the independent model in news journalism.
Regarding digital journalism, he admits that it can be sustainable. “It is possible to make a living from this, it is possible to do good journalism, it is possible to move forward. It is possible to demonstrate that the present and the future are digital, not through traditional media“Jorge Ramos tells us.
