The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated this Tuesday that The investigation into the participation of US agents in an anti-drug operation in the state of Chihuahua must continue despite the resignation of the state prosecutor in fashion, César Jáuregui, and stressed that the central thing is to defend national sovereignty and compliance with the law.
“In this case, what matters to us is the defense of sovereignty, the Constitution and the National Security Law. And that is why clarification of this case is very important.“, declared the president during her morning press conference.
The statements occur after on Monday César Jáuregui presented his irrevocable resignation from the position of fashionable prosecutor of Chihuahua (northern Mexico), following the controversy generated by the alleged participation of US agents in an anti-drug operation in the Sierra Tarahumara, on April 19, in which two alleged members of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and two Mexicans died.
The Mexican leader insisted that the official’s resignation does not close the case.
“Yesterday a resignation came and we have to continue investigating. The investigation has to continue. It doesn’t stop with a resignation. There needs to be further research”, he emphasized.

He added that the process is already in the hands of the Abnormal Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic (FGR) which “will be able to provide information regarding this,” he noted.
“The most important thing for us is respect for the sovereignty of any Mexican and any state government.municipal and federal government. The law has to be followed,” he said.
Jáuregui acknowledged that the initial information he offered about the presence of foreign officials was “inconsistent” and admitted omissions in the institutional management of the case.
The episode has strained the relationship between the federal government and the state administration, headed by Governor Maru Campos, in addition to reviving the debate about Washington’s interference in Mexico in matters of security.
In that sense, Sheinbaum maintained that the resignation should not mean the closure of the file, and recalled that the Prosecutor’s Office is the one who must carry out the investigation and clarify everything because it is not a “minor situation.”
The president insisted on the need for transparency about the factsespecially due to its implications in bilateral cooperation with the United States and the Mexican elegant framework.
“The people of Mexico have the right to know the truth. So, let all the investigations be done”, he concluded.
The case came to light after a road accident on a road in the Sierra Tarahumara, where four people died, including two US officials, which led the federal government to question whether the procedures provided for by the Constitution and the National Security Law for the presence of foreign agents in Mexican territory were followed.
