Iran has presented a new negotiation proposal to the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war while postponing negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program until later, according to the Axios portal.
The digital media cites a US official and two other anonymous sources with knowledge of the matter.
According to the official, Trump plans to study on Monday with his team the current impasse in the negotiations and possible steps to follow..
For his part, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchí, stated this Monday that this weekend’s visit to Islamabad was “very good” and that the “specific conditions” under which “negotiations between Iran and the United States can continue” were reviewed.
According to the Iranian agency IRNA, the head of Persian diplomacy, who is already in Saint Petersburg, said that Tehran’s conditions for the negotiations “are very important.” However, Araqchí did not go into details about those “specific conditions.”
Trump bets on naval blockade
Meanwhile, this Sunday, in an interview offered to Fox Recordsdata, Trump hinted that he wants to continue the naval blockade which is choking off Iran’s oil exports, in the hope that this will force Tehran to concede in the coming weeks.
The slowdown in negotiations between the United States and Iran worsened this weekend after the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, will leave Pakistan without showing any intention to talk with Washington, which in turn canceled the trip to Islamabad of Trump’s special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Iran seeks to avoid the nuclear issue
Araqchi raised the idea to sidestep the nuclear issue during their meetings in Islamabad, according to two of the sources with knowledge of the matter.
A source said Araghchi made it clear to Pakistani, Egyptian, Turkish and Qatari mediators over the weekend that Iranian leadership lacks consensus on how to address US demands for Iran to suspend uranium enrichment for at least a decade and remove its enriched uranium from the country.
The new proposal has been presented through Pakistani mediators, although it is not clear if the White House is willing to study it.
The offer states that the ceasefire would extend for a long period or that both parties would agree to a definitive end to the war. and that nuclear negotiations would begin later, once the strait was opened and the blockade that Washington has implemented on all ships trying to reach or leave Iranian ports has been lifted.
