An officer from the Houston Police Department (HPD), in Texas, was relieved of her duties after a video circulated on social media in which he allegedly made racist comments against African-American people.
The agent, identified as Ashley Gonzalez, remains under internal investigation while authorities verify the authenticity of the audiovisual self-discipline topic, according to Fox26.
Video content and public reaction
The video, widely distributed on digital platforms, shows a woman inside a vehicle using racial slurs and expressing hostility toward the black communityin addition to suggesting possible abuses of authority in the exercise of their functions.
The content generated a strong public reaction, accumulating more than a million views and thousands of rejection comments.
The Houston police officers union condemned the comments attributed to the officer and assured that behavior of this type is not tolerated within the institution.
Likewise, they indicated that The department is working to clarify the facts and adopt measures that guarantee the trust of the community.
For their part, local authorities indicated that there are indications that the woman in the video was indeed Gonzalez, although the investigation remains ongoing.
Officer’s career
Gonzalez joined the police force in January 2024 and was assigned to the South Gessner patrol division.
Before joining the police, he served in the United States Marine Corps between 2019 and 2023, as confirmed by official sources.
Depending on the results of the investigation, the officer could be reinstated in her duties or face an indefinite suspension, which would imply her permanent separation from the department.
Various organizations and community leaders have demanded strong actions. Among them, Activist Candice Matthews criticized the behavior attributed to the officer and called for her dismissal.
The case has reignited debate about police conduct, racial discrimination and accountability mechanisms in law enforcement.
The Houston Police Department keeps the investigation open and it is expected that the corresponding disciplinary actions will be determined in the coming days.
