Donald Trump claimed to have instructed the Navy to act forcefully against Iranian vessels that place mines in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important sea routes for international energy trade.

The president stated on his social network Truth Social that he ordered “shoot and destroy any vessel” involved in these activities. “There should be no hesitation”he wrote, in a message that quickly generated reactions in both the political and military spheres.

Trump also noted that American minesweepers already operate in the area and asked to intensify their work. “Our minesweepers are clearing the strait at this precise moment (…) I order that this activity continue, but at triple the intensity,” he added in his publication.

A critical point for world trade

He Strait of Hormuzlocated between Iran and Oman, is considered one of the most sensitive bottlenecks on the planet. Approximately a fifth of the world’s oil passes through this route, making it a very important point for international economic stability.

Any disruption in this area could skyrocket crude oil prices. and generate uncertainty in international markets. In this context, Trump’s statements have raised alarms about a possible increase in tension between the United States and Iran.

Maritime security experts revealed to Industry Insider that such an order could quickly escalate into a direct confrontation: “The use of lethal force in such an important area could trigger an immediate response from Iran.”

Military escalation risks

The statements come amid growing concern about the presence of naval mines in the area and the revelation of the War Department, which assured that the US Navy intercepted and boarded a tanker sanctioned that was sailing with Iranian crude oil in the Indian Ocean, which maintains a naval blockade of the coasts of the Islamic Republic.

“During the night, US forces carried out a maritime interdiction and a boarding in exercise of the right of visit of the sanctioned ship M/T Majestic X, without flag, that transported oil from Iranin the Indian Ocean within the Indopacom area of responsibility” (Indo-Pacific Command), the Pentagon published in X.
