The Democratic representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick announced his resignation from Congress amid a ethical investigation and criminal proceedings who have put his handling of campaign funds under scrutiny, AP reported.
The decision was drawn before the House of Representatives Ethics Committee issue a possible formal sanction. According to the panel, the legislator would have committed at least 25 violations of ethical standardsincluding irregularities related to campaign financing.
In a message spread on social networks, Cherfilus-McCormick defended her position and criticized the process. “Instead of participating in these political games, I prefer to step aside,” he wrote, ensuring that he was not given enough time to prepare his defense with his new right team.
The case has a criminal dimension
The congresswoman faces federal charges for allegedly diverting around $5 million from COVID-19 pandemic relief funds. According to the accusations, this money would have been channeled through companies linked to his family to finance his 2022 election campaign.
Cherfilus-McCormick has pleaded not guilty both criminal charges and ethical violations. During a previous hearing, he invoked the Fifth Amendment to avoid incriminating himself, while his lawyer, William Barzee, argued that the internal process should have included a broader trial with the presentation of evidence and witnesses.
The reactions from the political sphere were immediate. From the Republican National Committee, the spokesperson Emma Hall launched a harsh criticism against the legislator: “Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is a brazen fraudster who stole millions from Florida taxpayers and bragged about it. Resigning in disgrace is the least after having defrauded the American people, and all the Democrats who ran out the clock to cover up their corruption should be ashamed. Congress will be better off without her.”
The investigation against Cherfilus-McCormick It spanned two years, included dozens of subpoenas, interviews and the review of thousands of documents. Despite this, community leaders in the congresswoman’s district urged caution. “Our communities deserve stability… and our right to representation must be protected,” they stated in a letter addressed to the committee.
Cherfilus-McCormick’s resignation adds to a series of recent departures in Congress linked to ethical investigations, which has revived the debate on transparency and accountability in politics.
