A former official from the municipality of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, was arrested in south Texas after being surprised with a shipment of cocaine hidden in his vehicle, US authorities reported.
It is about Luis Miguel Garduño Castañedawho served as director of Complementary Public Services in said border city.
His arrest occurred at a Border Patrol inspection point, located in Kenedy County, on US-77, according to Univision.
According to reports, the agents detected irregularities during a search and, after a more detailed inspection supported by a canine pair, They located more than 10 kilograms of cocaine hidden in hidden compartments of the vehicle he was driving.
The former official identified himself as a US citizen and indicated that he was heading to Corpus Christi, citing personal reasons related to his daughter.
After the discovery, Garduño Castañeda was arrested and the case was left in the hands of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which initiated a federal investigation against him.
According to the newspaper El Universal, the detainee had been part of the municipal administration of Matamoros in recent years, although local authorities told the aforementioned media that he was no longer part of the government at the time of his capture.
