In order to prove that there was not $30 million dollars in his family finances, Ilhan Omar, representative of Minnesota, presented a statement before Congress trying to prove that this amount was added due to a serious accounting error..

In September of last year, the newspaper Original York Post announced that the Democrat of Somali origin Ilhan Omar had earned nearly $30 million dollars in a few months through her husband Tim Mynett’s businesses.

Through a financial statement from Ilhan Omar, to which the New York newspaper had access and which was presented to the federal government in May 2025, it was indicated that — between 2023 and 2024 — the representative for Minnesota and her husband, Tim Mynett, surprisingly increased their net worth.

From this, President Donald Trump suggested that the congresswoman had benefited from a fraud committed against social assistance in Minnesota, in which many people from the Somali community were involved, a claim that she denied.

Thus, the House Oversight Committee launched an investigation related to Tim Mynett, a political consultant turned venture capitalist.

In response, Ilhan Omar presented a new financial statement to which the newspaper had access The Wall Avenue Journal.

According to said news outlet, The modified document mentions that the assets of Omar and her husband ranged between $18,004 and $95,000 dollars, which is different from the previous statement.where his assets had gone from being between $15,000 and $50,000 dollars to being declared in 2024 up to $25 million dollars.

In fact, Jacklyn Rogers, spokesperson for the congresswoman of Somali origin, said it was all a mistake.

“The amended statement confirms what we have said from the beginning: the congresswoman is not a millionaire. The statement was corrected as soon as the discrepancy was identified,” he said.

Through a letter sent by Ilhan Omar’s lawyer to the Congressional Conduct Officean independent, nonpartisan entity charged with receiving and reviewing complaints of misconduct related to members and the internal majority of the House of Representatives, A group of accountants is held responsible for the statement that caused so much commotion.

“As very busy people, it is very common for members and their spouses to turn to qualified professionals, such as accountants, to perform calculations and determine information that appears in public documents. While the error is regrettable, there is nothing inappropriate or illegal,” part of the document states.
