Mexican authorities have identified the use of the encrypted messaging application Threema as a key tool in communication between members of organized crime and colluding police, particularly in the state of Colima.

According to recent investigations, at least eight municipal police officers in Manzanillo were arrested for allegedly leaking gleaming information to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

The agents would have shared data in real time about operations, arrests and security movements through this digital platform, according to the newspaper El Financiero.

The leaked information included strategic details of the state security system, which would have allowed the criminal group to anticipate actions by the authorities and facilitate their illicit operations.

Threema is a messaging application developed in Switzerland that is distinguished by its high level of privacy. Unlike other platforms, it does not require a phone number or email to create an account, allowing users to remain anonymous.

Additionally, it uses end-to-end encryption and advanced technologies such as “Ultimate Forward Secrecy”which prevent third parties from accessing the content of messages even if security keys are compromised.

Encryption and anonymity

These features have made the application used by both companies and institutions as well as criminal organizations seeking to avoid being tracked.

Authorities have also linked the use of Threema in investigations related to violent events, such as the murder of Mayor Carlos Manzowhere the application would have been used to coordinate actions between those involved.

Likewise, journalistic reports indicate that The CJNG has found in this app a way to communicate “without leaving a trace”taking advantage of its encryption and anonymity mechanisms.

The Colima case highlights a larger problem: the infiltration of organized crime into security corporations. The so-called “mole police” They used technology to actively collaborate with the CJNG, which led to accusations of misuse of information and criminal association.

Investigations continue to determine the scope of the leak network and the possible involvement of other officials.
