The United States justice again postponed the sentencing hearing against Hugo “El Pollo” Carvajalformer Chavismo intelligence chief, without a new date for the process having been set so far.
Carvajal, who was a key figure during the government of Hugo Chavezfaces charges of narcoterrorism, drug trafficking and weapons-related crimes, for which he could receive a life sentence.
The hearing had already been postponed on previous occasions, in part due to negotiations between the former military man’s defense and the US prosecutor’s office.
The new postponement occurs without detailed public explanation or immediate registration in the judicial file, which increases uncertainty about the future of the case.
Key testimony
According to CNN, Carvajal has become relevant not only for the crimes he faces, but also for the information he has provided about the internal workings of Chavismo and its alleged relationship with illicit activities.
His statements include accusations towards senior officials, including Nicolas Maduroin the context of investigations into drug trafficking and criminal networks.
Furthermore, his judicial situation occurs in parallel with other processes in the United States against Venezuelan leaders, which reinforces the political dimension of the case.
The lack of a defined date for the sentence keeps the process open and leaves both the judicial resolution and the the possible impact of Carvajal’s cooperation with US authorities.
