The administration of President Donald Trump ended a million-dollar contract with a charity of the Catholic Church in Miami, Floridawhich for years was in charge of providing accommodation and care to migrant minors who arrive alone in the country.

The decision was made by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), dependence of Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)which canceled the agreement with Catholic Charities in Miami, a relationship that had been maintained since the arrival of the first Cuban exiles to South Florida.

Archbishop Thomas Wenskiof the Archdiocese of Miami acknowledged in a note published by the Miami Heraldthat the United States government “has abruptly decided to end more than 60 years of relationship” with Catholic Charities.

The Archdiocese of Miami’s services for unaccompanied minors have been recognized for their excellence and have served as a model for other agencies across the country. However… they have been stripped of their funding and will be forced to close within three months,” the archbishop added.

Tensions between Trump and Leo XIV

The closing of the contract occurs right in the middle of tensions between the Trump Government and Pope Leo XIV and the US Catholic community.

Last Sunday Trump assured that the pontiff is a man “weak against crime” and “gross on foreign policy,” alluding to his criticism of Iran and Venezuela.

In a long message on his Truth Social network, the president urged the pontiff to “concentrate on being a great pope, not a politician,” because, he assured, “it is harming the Catholic Church”.

Following these statements, Trump published on Sunday night an image that appears to be created by artificial intelligence in which he shows himself embodying the figure of Jesus Christ and apparently healing a sick person lying in bed.

Pope Leo XIV said he is not afraid of the Trump administration

In response to the republican, Leo XIV said that “He is not afraid of the Trump administration” and? “will continue to raise his voice to build peace”.

Although without mentioning Trump’s name, the Pope has called it unacceptable and has encouraged the faithful to “communicate.” with the congressmen to ask for peace.
