Governor Gavin Newsom announced this Tuesday the use of cutting-edge technology at the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to combat identity fraud and improve office efficiency.

The two new functions include digital signature barcodes on driver’s licenses and ID cardsand a simplified registration system with QR code in offices, putting California at the forefront in fighting fraud and improving the DMV experience.

California is redoubling its fight against fraud, without further ado. We are strengthening security at the DMV and doubling down on protections that safeguard people’s identities and information. “This is how accountability is demonstrated,” Newsom stated in a statement.

The governor expressed that he is also improving the system at the DMV to benefit citizens.

“A new registration process using QR code is being implemented in all DMV officesreducing waiting times and improving efficiency,” he added.

Newsom assured that it’s about providing security and serviceto protect Californians, as well as to streamline and simplify their daily government procedures.

The digital signature that is incorporated on the back of the identity documents will allow Easy-to-use, open source card readers quickly check if a signature is validor if it has been altered or revoked, ensuring the safety of California residents.

California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin said that, under Newsom’s leadership, the state sets the standard nationally regarding safe and forward-thinking public services.

“This card technology reflects our commitment to protecting Californians against identity theft and fraud, putting cutting-edge tools directly at the fingertips of businesses and consumers,” said Omishakin.

The Federal Trade Commission reported that National fraud reached $15.85 billion in 2025with identity theft being the most important segment.

Last year 435,985 cases of identity theft were recorded in California.

“Identity theft is rapidly increasing, and when people fall victim to this crime, they lose valuable time and money. People want to be sure that Your California-issued ID is secure“said California DMV Director Steve Gordon.

It was clarified that California residents no need to rush to switch to a new driver’s license or ID cardwhich are valid until their expiration date.

The people who want to replace their current documents can request them online on the California DMV Driver’s License Replacement Application page, although applicable fees for the replacement card will apply.

The DMV also implemented an improvement that allows users to check themselves into offices by scanning a QR codewith the Digital Admission Process (VIP), designed to reduce waiting times, minimize capacity in offices and guarantee uniform service in the state.

Each DMV customer who arrives at an office will be able to scan a QR code and You will receive a notification when your turn is approaching. This new feature is in addition to the online self-registration option that the department implemented in 2021.
