A 14-year-old teenager was arrested in the city of Atlanta for his alleged responsibility in the death of a 12-year-old boyin an event that occurred inside a home on Saturday afternoon. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the shooting, which occurred while they were handling weapons.
According to a news release from the Atlanta Police Department, the juvenile was detained without incident on Sunday and taken to a juvenile detention center.
Incident details
Authorities reported that officers responded to a home after receiving an emergency call about a person injured by a gunshot around 1:49 p.m.
When they arrived at the scene, they found the 12-year-old boy with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
Although the investigation is ongoing, preliminary reports indicate that the shooting occurred inside a room.
Versions collected by local media indicate that The minors could have been handling firearms inside the bedroom when the shooting occurred.
Police have not officially confirmed this hypothesis or revealed what led to the shooting.
Call for prevention
Captain Germain Dearlove stressed the importance of keeping weapons out of the reach of minors.
“For parents and guardians, check your homes and make sure weapons are secured,” he said, while recommending supervision of young people when they receive visitors.
Residents of the area stated that days before they had already noticed worrying situations.
A neighbor claimed to have seen groups of young people handling weapons nearby for several consecutive days, which even led him to contact the police, according to FOX 5.
Authorities continue to question witnesses and people who were in the home at the time of the incident.
Police cautioned that the information available is preliminary and could change as the investigation progresses.
