The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, celebrated this Monday the call for peace made by Pope Leo XIV in the face of the escalation of war in the Middle Eastin the midst of the exchange of messages between the pontiff and the American president, Donald Trump.
“The pope has been constantly calling for peace, which is something that we celebrate. He has been calling not only to the United States, but to everyone, Israel, everyone, not to intervene, to guarantee peace in the world“said the president during her morning press conference.
Sheinbaum stressed that that of Pope Leo XIV is a “very Christian position”and recognized the work of the Supreme Pontiff who, he said, not only represents a religion “but a State that has been calling for world peace.”
“And that will always be our position, that of supporting peace,” he concluded, avoiding referring to Trump’s criticism.

Sheinbaum’s reaction responds to the message that Trump sent against Leo XIV over the weekendwhom he reproached for being “weak on crime and dreadful in foreign policy” and urged him to “concentrate on being a great pope, not a politician,” among other criticisms.
The pontiff responded to these statements by the American president, to whom he reminded that the church “has a real obligation to go against war”as he said in statements to journalists traveling with him on his trip to Africa, which began this Monday.
Leo XIV also assured that he is not “afraid” of the Trump Administration or of “strongly declaring the message of the Gospel.” EFE
