The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced the dismantling of three clandestine fentanyl packaging laboratories in New York City.
The operation, which spanned several districts, took place for six hours. The authorities reported that in the end Approximately 40 kilograms of fentanyl were seized.
According to a statement, the three laboratories operated independently within five kilometers of each other: two in the Bronx and one in Washington Heights, Giant apple.
“They operated in apartment buildings and homes,” said Christopher Roberts, special agent in charge of the DEA Task Force Division in New York. “They were exposing the residents, the children of these neighborhoods and these buildings, to these deadly chemicals.”.
The value of the seized drugs amounts to around 7.5 million dollars. Investigators also found loaded firearms and tens of thousands of dollars in cash.
Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget Brennan reported that 8 people were arrested in the operation and added that one apartment had all the equipment necessary to package fentanyl.
“I had blenders, coffee grinders and stamps to identify fentanyl with various designs,” he said. “Among the stamps were ‘war zone’ and the word ‘Taliban’ beneath the image of an assault rifle.”
One of the operations was located near two schools and the Bronx Zoo. “The number of people who could be harmed by 90 pounds of fentanyl is incalculable,” said Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.
During one of the drug raids in the Bronx, authorities reported that Mulk, a New York Police Department (NYPD) narcotics detection dog, was exhibiting symptoms of fentanyl exposure.
“Mulk’s pupils were dilated. The dog was somewhat lethargic and dragged his hind leg when walking,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
The dog received two doses of Narcan and is now fully recovered.
Federal officials indicated that They are investigating whether these clandestine laboratories were connected to large drug trafficking networks. They added that their main goal is to reduce overdose deaths.
