Donald Trump affirmed this Thursday that his administration reached a “great agreement” with Iran to end tensions between both countries and assured that the document could be signed this weekend in Europe. However, Iranian authorities rejected that version and maintained that there is still no final decision on the alleged understanding.

“We just reached a great deal to end the war with Iran,” Trump declared from the Oval Office. The president added that “once the documents are finalized, we should finish in the next few days” and that the signing would “probably” take place in European territory.

During his statements, Trump maintained that the eventual pact would guarantee that “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon” and assured that the documents are “practically finished.” He also stated that “not only will they not have, but they will not purchase or develop in any way, under any circumstances, a nuclear weapon.”

Nevertheless, The Iranian government denied that there was a closed agreement. According to the official IRNA agency, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry indicated that no final decision has been made. and that important differences persist in the negotiations, which is why he considered it premature to talk about a signature or a specific date.

According to various diplomatic sources cited by international media, the talks initially contemplate the signing of a letter of intent or memorandum of understanding that would open a period of approximately 60 days to negotiate a broader agreement on the Iranian nuclear program and other regional issues.

Trump also assured that the eventual pact would allow the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened, one of the most strategic sea routes for global oil trade, stating that “the strait will open as soon as we have the agreement signed.”

The US president indicated that he has held recent conversations with leaders of Israel, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and other governments in the region, and announced that he also plans to dialogue with Türkiye.

He also noted that he would not personally attend the eventual signing ceremony and that US representation would fall to Vice President JD Vance.
