At a time when the CDMX government is making superhuman efforts with 13 thousand workers working in two shifts to complete the remodeling of the Metro stationsa study of the UNAM revealed that Mexicans feel more concern than enthusiasm for the World Cup 2026.
According to a survey carried out by the UNAM Institute of Geography in collaboration with the Department of Geography of the University of the Balearic Islands of Spainestablished that the World Cup tournament in the three venues, Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, is generating more anguish than joy, especially due to the economic situation that the Aztec nation is going through.
The study, applied to 460 residents of the three cities that will have the honor of hosting the World Cup, established that the main concerns are the possible increase in vehicular traffic (that the government of Clara Brugada is making efforts to bring it down with suspension of classes and home popularity of job days among bureaucrats).
All this because it will generate many complications with daily mobility in a metropolis like CDMX, that is being suffocated by social demands, marches for different causesin the face of an indifference at the levels of government that has generated very high discontent one week before the World Cup begins.
This will also cause an eventual displacement of different urban areas that will cause a greater flow of people in the first square of Mexico City and from the areas surrounding the Mexico City stadium (Azteca)
The essay also reflected a marked distrust towards the institutions in charge of the organization and management of the event, which generated endless concerns among participants due to the lack of transparency in the use of public resources, the limited establishment of corruption, the government’s capacity to guarantee security and the perception that the benefits will favor the private sector more than the local population.
Even the researcher at the Institute of Geography, Ilia Alvarado Sizzo, He pointed out that the World Cup encompasses one of the most relevant phenomena on the planet due to its ability to mobilize millions of people and generate economic, urban and social transformations in host cities. Likewise, he recalled that soccer has nearly four billion followers in the world.
The majority of those surveyed recognized that the World Cup event will bring economic benefits and job opportunities and also considered that those profits will be distributed inequitably.
