ANAHEIM, CA – In 1995, the film “Toy Story” changed the history of animated cinema. Pixar’s debut feature film was the first film created by computer. It had such an impact that the Film Academy recognized it with an Oscar for Special Achievement. An award that paved the way for the creation of the Oscar for Best Animated Film, which has been awarded since 2002.

That is why for Pixar – and for Disney, of which the studio located in Emeryville, in the San Francisco Bay, is a part – each sequel to “Toy Story” is a special moment. LA OPINIÓN had the opportunity to see the first third of “Toy Story 5” in advancewhich opens June 19, and chat with its creators a few days ago at Disneyland.

Without spoilers, here’s what we already know about “Toy Story 5”:

1. Toys vs. Screens

Traditional toys are in crisis. Children today spend hours looking at a screen and there are more and more abandoned toys. This is the critical thesis of “Toy Story 5”, a theme that is certainly present in our steady world and in which any family with children will be represented.

2. “Toys are for playing. Technology is for everything”

Woody, who no longer lives in Bonnie’s house, says this phrase to Jessie in a defeatist tone, as if the battle was already lost. The film not only raises the obsolescence of toys, but also the omnipresence of technology in our lives.

3. The years also pass through toys

It is fun, but at the same time it generates a feeling of longing, to see a mature Woody, with physical consequences derived from his “age.”

4. Animals take action

Although we have seen some pets – especially dogs – in previous motion footage of the franchise, in “Toy Story 5” the animals play an important role for the first time and interact with the toys. “I always thought that the secret world of toys is understood with the secret world of animals,” says Andrew Stanton, co-director of the film with Kenna Harris.

5. We will see new characters

From toys with screens to horses, “Toy Story 5” introduces us to new characters. The film’s artists took advantage of advances in technology to bring to life these roles that, in some cases, would have been impossible to create a few years ago, especially in the case of animals.

6. Jessie gains prominence

“It’s about time,” Stanton said of cowgirl Jessie taking the pivotal role in “Toy Story 5.” Although Woody and Buzz Lightyear are present in the plot, the central character is the rag doll voiced by Joan Cusack again.
