Daddy Yankee will be honored as “Person of the Year” at the Latin Grammys 2026

This 2026, the singer Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, better known as Daddy Yankeeadds one more honor to his list: will receive the “Person of the Year” award from the Latin Recording Academy within the framework of the 2026 Latin Grammy Awards celebration.

According to a statement from the Latin Recording Academy, This is an award for his work as a pioneer and promoter of the globalization of reggaeton during his almost three decades of artistic career. However, his achievements are not limited to his roles as a singer, composer and performer within the urban genre, but also for his humanitarian efforts.

“Daddy Yankee has been a defining force in the international rise of Latin music,” said Manuel Abud, executive director of La Academia. “His leadership, discipline and vision opened the doors to a genre and inspired an entire generation of creators, and he remains as relevant today as ever. We are proud to honor him as our 2026 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year.”

As in previous editions, The award will be presented at a private gala that will take place on Wednesday, November 11 in Las Vegasas part of Latin Grammy Week 2026.

Regarding this honor, the interpreter of “Gasolina” and “Con Calma” said he was grateful for the recognition of his perseverance, resilience and creativity.

“This recognition from the Latin Recording Academy is a dream come true, it means a lot because it represents more than a successful career, it is a recognition of years of discipline, struggle, faith and commitment to our culture,” said Daddy Yankee. “To receive something like this is to honor Puerto Rico, to honor all Latinos, and specifically to that entire generation that believed in our music when no one else understood it”.

Daddy Yankee and his impact as an international star

From his humble beginnings in the neighborhoods of Las Lomas and Villa Kennedy in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Daddy Yankee channeled a complex social reality, marked by violence, censorship and exclusion, into his own musical language. In a context where reggaeton music was stigmatized by society, he not only defended the art, but also played a decisive role in its cultural legitimation.

This hunger to represent Latin American warmth led him to become the first reggaeton artist to embark on an international tour, visiting more than 29 countries. Among his international hits are: “Limbo”, “Con Calma” and “Dura”.

However, Daddy Yankee’s social impact is equally powerful. Over the years he has become an agent of change in Puerto Rico, offering social and educational programs through his foundation.and demonstrates a genuine and consistent commitment to the most vulnerable communities. In recent years, his strategic investment in sports, from the “Cangreros de Santurce” to the NBA Basketball School in Puerto Rico.
