Mel Gibson reveals the first images of “The Resurrection of the Christ”

Mel Gibson offered the first preview of his new film “The Resurrection of the Christ: Segment One”the long-awaited sequel to his 2004 blockbuster, “The Passion of the Christ.”

For this epic story, Italy was the right setting. They recorded in Rome, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, Brindisi and Matera. The tape will have two parts.

However, the news comes with a bittersweet announcement for fans. Gibson revealed that both films will suffer further delays in their release dates. Part one was postponed only a few months, going from March 26 to May 6, 2027.

For its part, part two suffers a more significant delay of a full year, moving from May 6, 2027 to May 25, 2028.

As reported by Diversity, Gibson assures that he has brought this new story to the screen “exactly how he imagined it.”

“I am deeply grateful to my incredibly talented cast and crew for pouring their hearts into this production. Together, we created something powerful. This film represents a traditional part of my life’s work, and has asked everything of me as a filmmaker and as an artist. This is much more than a movie to me. It is a mission that I have been telling for more than 20 years: what I believe is the most important story in human history”, he stated.

“The Resurrection of the Christ” takes up the universe of “The Passion of the Christ”which originally followed Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene during the last twelve hours before the crucifixion. For this sequel, Gibson described the script, written with Randall Wallace, as an “acid trip,” adding that he “never read anything like it.”

The plot, as the title suggests, will focus on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The new cast includes Jaakko Ohtonen and Mariela Garriga in the roles of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, accompanied by Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio and Rupert Everett.

“The Passion of the Christ” It was the highest-grossing film at the American box office for a long time. with $370 million, until it was surpassed by Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” in 2024, which reached $636 million.
